Waimea Big Island restaurants — eating in ranch country, and when to stay in.

Waimea, also called Kamuela, is the ranch town in the cool green uplands of Hawaiʻi Island, about half an hour above the Kohala Coast resorts. Its restaurants are small and local, with a long farm-to-table streak: ranch beef, upcountry vegetables, bakeries, coffee and a handful of dinner rooms. This guide explains how eating in Waimea works, how to time it around the drive and the weather, and when a dinner cooked at your villa is the better plan.

Where Waimea is, and why it feels different

Waimea sits at about 2,670 feet between Kohala Mountain and the slopes of Mauna Kea. That elevation makes it several degrees cooler than the coast, often misty, and green where the Kona side is black lava. It is paniolo country: Parker Ranch, one of the largest cattle ranches in the United States, is headquartered here.

Kamuela is the post office name and Waimea is the town; your booking may use either. From the Waikōloa resorts it is roughly 25 to 35 minutes up the hill, about 20 minutes from Hāpuna, and around 50 minutes from Kailua-Kona.

What the Waimea food scene looks like

Waimea has long been tied to Hawaiʻi Regional Cuisine and farm-to-table cooking, because the farms and ranches are right there. Expect ranch-raised beef on menus, vegetables from upcountry growers, bakeries and coffee shops, plate lunch, Mexican and Italian kitchens, a brewpub, and a few dinner restaurants that are worth the drive from the coast.

Rooms are small and local. Some take reservations and some do not, so a weekend dinner for a big group needs planning. Many visitors make Waimea a lunch stop on the way to Waipiʻo or Pololū, or come up for one dinner out during a Kohala week.

Saturday markets and morning food

Saturday morning is when Waimea is busiest. Several farmers and community markets run in and around town, with growers, baked goods, prepared food and coffee, and some items sell out early. Arrive early, bring a bag and cash as a backup, and use the morning to stock a villa kitchen.

Our Kona farmers market guide covers the markets on the coast, and the short Waimea notes explain how upcountry stays work.

Dinner timing, cool nights and the drive down

Waimea evenings are cool, and a jacket is normal even in summer. Dinner service tends to end earlier than at the resorts, so book where you can and plan to eat on the early side.

If you are staying on the Kohala Coast, remember the drive back down Kawaihae Road or the highway in the dark, often through fog or rain on the upper stretch. If the driver wants to enjoy dinner, a chef at the villa is the simpler plan.

Waimea or the coast for your big dinner

For a celebration, you are choosing between a small upcountry dining room and a resort restaurant at sea level, and both get busy in peak weeks. Our Mauna Lani restaurants guide and Waikoloa restaurants guide cover the coast side.

For a group of ten or more, or a table with mixed diets and young children, a dinner at the house usually wins: one long table, sunset on the lānai, and nobody on the road afterwards.

Staying in Waimea: ranch houses and cottages

Waimea has ranch houses, cottages and estate homes rather than resorts, and kitchens vary from full ranch kitchens to small cottage galleys. We check the kitchen before we quote. Waimea and Hāmākua are a surcharge zone for us, from $75, printed as its own line, and our private chef Waimea page has the local details. The Kona–Kohala corridor, from Kailua-Kona to the Kohala resorts, is the base zone.

When a chef night at the villa beats eating out

Big families, a birthday or anniversary, mixed diets, or the first night after a long flight all point the same way. A private chef Kona dinner brings the restaurant to your table: the chef plans the menu with you, shops, cooks, serves and leaves the kitchen clean. Upcountry beef and Kona-side fish can both be on the menu, and we only name a farm after we have verified it in writing.

Most visitors mix the two: a lunch or one dinner out in Waimea, and the group nights at the villa.

A sample Kohala week that uses Waimea well

A week on the Kohala Coast often settles into a rhythm. Beach mornings at Hāpuna or the resort lagoons, one upcountry day with the Saturday market, lunch in Waimea and a drive to the Waipiʻo or Pololū lookouts, and a dinner out on the coast. On top of that, one or two chef nights at the villa, usually the arrival night and the big celebration, so nobody spends the holiday cooking or driving.

Birthdays and anniversaries that land in the stay are the nights to book first. Tell us which nights you want cooked, and the quote follows that plan.

Reunions, wedding weeks and bigger groups

A welcome dinner for twenty, a reunion buffet or a wedding-week party is a staffed event rather than a chef dinner. Big Island catering covers villa events of 10 to 75 guests on the Kona–Kohala coast, with servers at $80 an hour and a sous-chef at $105 an hour on four- to five-hour minimums, listed as their own lines. Tables, linens and tents are not included unless you ask for them.

What a dinner at your villa costs with us

Signature dinners on Hawaiʻi Island are published at $210–$325 a guest with groceries included, for a minimum party of six, and a simpler table starts from $165 a guest. Dinner for two starts from $825. Stay Chef days for a chef and an assistant start from $1,450 a day for one meal, with groceries billed at cost.

A 20% service charge and Hawaiʻi GET up to 4.712% are added as their own lines, a 50% deposit locks the date and gratuity is voluntary. The full rate card is on Big Island private chef cost. Hawaiʻi Island is by inquiry, so the written quote is the confirmed total once a chef is confirmed for your date.
