Waikoloa restaurants — the beach resort, the village up the hill and nights at the rental.

Waikoloa restaurants fall into two places that share a name: the Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Kohala Coast, with hotel dining rooms and a shopping centre, and Waikoloa Village, the residential town up the hill. This guide helps families in a Waikoloa rental choose where to eat out and which nights to keep at the house.

Waikoloa Beach Resort or Waikoloa Village?

Most visitors who search for Waikoloa restaurants mean the Waikoloa Beach Resort, the coastal resort area north of Kona International Airport off Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway. It groups hotels, condos, golf courses and the Queens’ Marketplace shopping centre, and the resort lists free entertainment and cultural activities each month. Its restaurants sit inside the hotels, around the golf clubhouses and in the shopping areas.

Waikoloa Village is a separate residential community inland and upslope, reached by Waikoloa Road. It has its own everyday shops and places to eat, and it feels like a neighbourhood rather than a resort. Search results often mix the two, so check which one an address is in before you plan dinner around it.

Resort dining on the Kohala Coast

The resort restaurants range from poolside grills and casual counters to dressier dining rooms with ocean views. They are convenient if you are staying on the resort, and they are busiest at sunset, in winter and over holiday weeks. Reserve the table you want, mention allergies when you book, and expect resort pricing.

We do not publish rankings, ratings or partner restaurants, and there are already plenty of top-ten lists. The useful question is not which room is best but which nights you want to be in one. The Mauna Lani resort, just up the coast, has its own restaurants too, and our Mauna Lani page covers dinners at the house there.

Where do locals eat around Waikoloa?

Mostly outside the resort dining rooms. Casual places, plate lunch, poke from a grocery counter and food trucks feed much of the west side, in Waikoloa Village, down the coast in Kailua-Kona and up the hill in Waimea. They are the right call for lunch between beaches and a good way to eat like the island does.

Shopping for the house follows the same logic. Our Kona farmers market guide covers west-side markets and how to keep produce cool on the drive back up the coast.

Is it better to stay in Waikoloa or Kona?

It depends on how your family wants to eat. Kailua-Kona has a walkable town with many more restaurants, from oceanfront rooms on Aliʻi Drive to local spots, and our Kona restaurants guide covers them. Waikoloa is quieter and more resort-like, with fewer choices within walking distance and dry, sunny weather that suits outdoor dinners.

In practice, a Waikoloa stay means more dinners at the house or the resort and fewer evenings driving into town. That is a good fit for families who want calm nights, and it is where a chef at the rental makes the most difference.

Sunsets and timing on the Kohala Coast

The Kohala Coast faces west across lava fields, so sunset over the water is the main event of most evenings. Restaurants with a view fill in the hour around it. If you book a table, book early; if you want the sunset from your own lānai, plan dinner at the house to start as the light goes.

The coast is also a real distance from the rest of the island. Volcano and Hilo are a full day out, and our east-side notes explain why we treat that side separately. After a long day out, a dinner waiting at the rental is often what tired families want.

When a chef night at the rental beats a restaurant

Large groups, mixed diets, small children who eat at five, a birthday or anniversary, or a day that ends late after a boat trip all point the same way. That is the evening a private chef Kona booking is built for, and the Waikoloa resort area is a base zone inside our Kona–Kohala corridor. The chef plans the menu, shops, cooks in your kitchen, serves and leaves the kitchen clean.

Our Waikoloa page covers dinners at the house in the resort area, and our fish species notes explain how we name fish as what is available on the day. For an overview of villa dinners across the island, see private chef Big Island.

Groups, reunions and celebrations

A welcome dinner for twenty, a reunion buffet or a wedding-week party at a Waikoloa or Mauna Lani house is a staffed event rather than a chef dinner. Big Island catering covers staffed villa events on the Kona–Kohala coast, with servers at $80 an hour and a sous-chef at $105 an hour on four- to five-hour minimums, listed as their own lines.

What a Waikoloa villa dinner costs with us

Signature dinners on Hawaiʻi Island are published at $210–$325 a guest with groceries included, for a minimum party of six, and a simpler table starts from $165 a guest. Stay Chef days for a chef and an assistant start from $1,450 a day for one meal, with groceries billed at cost and receipts handed over. The Waikoloa resort area is a base zone, so the published travel line from $75 applies only to houses outside the Kona–Kohala corridor.

A 20% service charge and Hawaiʻi GET are added as their own lines, a 50% deposit locks the date, and gratuity is voluntary. The full rate card is on Big Island private chef cost. Hawaiʻi Island is by inquiry, so the written quote is the confirmed total once a chef is confirmed for your date.

How to plan your Waikoloa nights

Send the rental address, your dates, the number of adults and children, any allergies and the nights you already have restaurant tables for. We will suggest which evenings suit a chef dinner and reply with a written quote. Use the inquiry form or message us on WhatsApp at +1 808-468-7748.

Winter and holiday weeks fill first on the Kohala Coast, for restaurants and chef dates alike. If your dates are firm, send them early even if the menu is still open.
