Kona restaurants — Aliʻi Drive, the harbour and when to eat at the rental.

Kona restaurants range from oceanfront rooms on Aliʻi Drive to plate-lunch counters up the hill and resort dining along the Kohala Coast. This guide helps families in a Kona rental decide which nights to book a table and which to keep at the house.

What “Kona restaurants” really covers

Kona is both a town and a whole coast. When people search for Kona restaurants they usually mean Kailua-Kona, the west-side town where Aliʻi Drive runs along the water. The wider Kona district also takes in Keauhou to the south, the coffee country upslope around Hōlualoa, and the harbour and airport stretch to the north. Beyond that, the Kohala Coast resorts at Waikoloa and Mauna Lani have their own dining rooms.

For a villa week, that geography matters more than any ranked list. Most of our guests stay in a rental somewhere along this coast and want two or three good nights out, plus easy dinners at the house on the days that start with an early snorkel or end with a long drive.

Aliʻi Drive and Kailua Village: sunset tables

The oceanfront restaurants on and just off Aliʻi Drive are what most visitors picture: open-air rooms, a mai tai and the sun dropping into the Pacific on the west-facing coast. They are busy at sunset, especially in winter and over holiday weeks, so a reservation for the table you actually want is worth making early. Ask for an ocean-side seat when you book and expect a crowd in the village on weekend evenings.

We do not publish rankings, ratings or partner restaurants. Search results are full of top-ten lists already. Book directly, mention dietary needs when you reserve, and check parking, because Kailua Village is compact and the evening rush is real.

Where locals eat in Kona

A common question is where locals eat, and the honest answer is that it is not only the oceanfront rooms. Plate lunch, poke from a grocery-store counter, saimin, food trucks and casual family places in town and up the hill feed most of the west side. They are the right call for a lunch between beaches, and they are a good way to taste the island without a reservation.

Market mornings fit the same pattern. Our Kona farmers market guide covers west-side shopping that turns into a dinner at the house.

Keauhou, the harbour and the coffee country

South of town, Keauhou is a quieter resort area with its own restaurants and a bay that many evening manta ray snorkel trips use. If your group has a manta trip booked, dinner either needs to be early or needs to be waiting at the house when everyone comes back wet and hungry. Our Keauhou page covers villa dinners in that pocket.

North of town, the boat harbour has casual waterfront spots, and the drive past the airport leads to the Kohala resorts. Upslope, Hōlualoa is a small coffee village with galleries and a slower pace, better for an afternoon than a late dinner on winding roads.

Kohala Coast resort dining: worth the drive?

The Waikoloa and Mauna Lani resorts have full-service restaurants, and some are among the most polished rooms on the island. From a Kailua-Kona rental they are a real drive up the coast, which is fine for one special night and tiring for a family every evening. If you are staying at Waikoloa, our Waikoloa page covers dinners at the house up there.

A practical rule: book the resort night on a rest day, not after a volcano trip or a full day in the water. The Hilo side and Volcano are a different day entirely, and our east-side notes explain why we quote that side separately.

When a chef night at the rental beats a restaurant

Some nights a table in town is the wrong plan. A group of ten or twelve rarely gets a good sunset table without booking far ahead. Mixed diets, toddlers who eat at five, grandparents who do not want to drive after dark, or a day that ends late from a manta trip all point the same way: dinner at the house.

That is the evening a private chef Kona booking is built for. The chef plans the menu, shops, cooks in your kitchen, serves on the lānai and leaves the kitchen clean, and the sunset is still yours. Fish is named as what it is on the day, and our fish species notes explain how we handle that. For the bigger picture of villa dinners on the island, see private chef Big Island.

A Kona week that mixes restaurants and the house

A pattern that works for most families: two reserved nights out, one sunset room on Aliʻi Drive and one resort or special-occasion dinner, plus two or three chef dinners at the rental and a couple of easy evenings with plate lunch or leftovers. That keeps the week relaxed and the budget clear.

Bigger occasions change the plan. A birthday for twenty, a reunion dinner or a wedding-week welcome party is a staffed event rather than a chef dinner. Big Island catering covers staffed villa events on the Kona–Kohala coast, with servers at $80 an hour and a sous-chef at $105 an hour on four- to five-hour minimums, listed as their own lines.

What a Kona villa dinner costs with us

Signature dinners on Hawaiʻi Island are published at $210–$325 a guest with groceries included, for a minimum party of six, and a simpler table starts from $165 a guest. Stay Chef days for a chef and an assistant start from $1,450 a day for one meal, with groceries billed at cost and receipts handed over. Houses outside the Kona–Kohala corridor add a published travel line from $75, and the east side is quoted separately.

A 20% service charge and Hawaiʻi GET are added as their own lines, a 50% deposit locks the date, and gratuity is voluntary. The full rate card is on Big Island private chef cost. Hawaiʻi Island is by inquiry, so the written quote is the confirmed total once a chef is confirmed for your date.

How to plan your Kona nights

Send the rental address, your dates, the number of adults and children, any allergies and which nights you already have restaurant tables for. Winter and holiday weeks fill first on the west side, for restaurants and for chef dates alike. If your dates are firm, send them early even if the menu is still open.
