Is Kona a good place for Thanksgiving?
For families who want warm weather and a slower pace, yes. The west side of the island is usually dry and sunny, the long weekend leaves time for the beach and the boat trips, and late November is calmer than the weeks around Christmas. Resorts and restaurants in Kailua-Kona and along the Kohala Coast run Thanksgiving buffets and set menus, and they book early.
If your group is staying in a rental with a proper kitchen and a lānai, there is another option: keep the whole day at the house and let someone else cook.
Resort buffet, to-go meal or a chef at the rental
A resort buffet suits a couple or a small family staying at that resort. You get turkey and the trimmings with no dishes, but you sit when the room has space, and the drive back along the coast after dinner can be long. Some restaurants and markets sell pre-ordered holiday meals to take away; they sell out and still leave someone reheating in an unfamiliar oven.
A dinner at the house suits multi-generation families and friends sharing a rental. That is the evening a private chef Kona booking is built for. The chef plans the menu with you, shops, cooks in your kitchen, serves and leaves the kitchen clean.
Where you stay changes the plan
Kailua-Kona town, Keauhou to the south and the coffee country of Hōlualoa above town are all inside our Kona–Kohala corridor, and so are the Waikoloa and Mauna Lani resort areas up the coast. Hōlualoa evenings are cooler, which suits a heavier holiday meal. Our Kona restaurants guide and Waikoloa restaurants guide cover the other nights of the week.
Hilo and Volcano are on the other side of the island, two and a half to three hours from Kona. We quote them separately with their own team day and never fit them into a west-side day.
Turkey and groceries on the west side
Kona has the west side’s larger supermarkets, but whole turkeys, fresh cranberries and specialty items can run short in the days before the holiday, and a Kohala house is a real drive from town. We place the turkey order as soon as your date is confirmed instead of hoping the shelf is full on Wednesday afternoon.
Rental ovens vary from large estate ranges to compact condo units. Tell us the oven size, the burners and whether there is a grill on the lānai when you send the brief, and the chef will plan around it, for example two smaller birds or a turkey roasted in parts. Local produce from the week can go into the sides; our Kona farmers market guide shows what the markets carry.
A Thanksgiving menu with Kona on the table
Most families want the classics: turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes and pie. A Kona table can add local fish as a starter, sweet potato, island greens and a lilikoʻi or coconut dessert next to the pumpkin pie. Many local Thanksgiving tables in Hawaiʻi also carry rice, sushi or poke beside the turkey, and the chef can work those in.
Kona coffee after dinner is a natural finish. We only name a coffee with its origin labelled correctly, and our coffee labeling notes explain why. Tell us about allergies, vegetarian guests and children’s plates early.
Timing the day on the Kona coast
In late November the sun sets before six on the Kona side. Many families eat in the afternoon, while there is still light on the lānai, and keep the evening for pie and sunset. If part of the group wants a morning snorkel or a boat trip on Thursday, tell us; the chef can shop and prep around it, but a dinner time everyone agrees on keeps the day calm.
Plan a covered spot or an indoor table as the backup. Kona is dry, but afternoon clouds and showers do roll down the slopes, and wind can pick up on the coast.
Bigger families and reunion weekends
A family of eight to twelve is a chef dinner. Twenty or more, a buffet across two houses or a weekend of meals is a staffed event, and Big Island catering covers that on the Kona–Kohala coast, with servers at $80 an hour and a sous-chef at $105 an hour on four- to five-hour minimums, listed as their own lines. Our family reunions notes cover the rest of a big-group week.
Many families also want the Friday covered: leftovers turned into a late lunch, or a second, simpler dinner after a day out. Stay Chef days, priced below, cover that without booking a new dinner each night.
What Thanksgiving dinner in Kona costs with us
Signature dinners on Hawaiʻi Island are published at $210–$325 a guest with groceries included, for a minimum party of six, and a simpler table starts from $165 a guest. If you want a chef for the whole long weekend, Stay Chef days for a chef and an assistant start from $1,450 a day for one meal, with groceries billed at cost and receipts handed over. The published travel line from $75 applies only to houses outside the Kona–Kohala corridor.
A 20% service charge and Hawaiʻi GET up to 4.712% are added as their own lines, a 50% deposit locks the date and gratuity is voluntary. The full rate card is on Big Island private chef cost. Hawaiʻi Island is by inquiry, so the written quote is the confirmed total once a chef is confirmed for your date.
