Big Island wedding venues — Kohala, Kona, Waimea and Hilo.

Big Island wedding venues are spread across an island bigger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined, so the first decision is the region, not the room. The Kohala Coast has the resorts and the sunniest lawns; Kailua-Kona and Keauhou have town-side villas; Waimea has ranch country and cool evenings; Hilo and Volcano have gardens, rain and rainforest. This guide sorts the island’s venues by region and type, explains the rules, weather and drives that decide the food, and shows where a chef or a staffed wedding week fits. We do not rank or recommend named venues and we have no venue partners.

Choose a region before a venue

Hawaiʻi Island is large enough that a Kohala ceremony and a Hilo reception are different days. Most visitor weddings happen on the west side, where the Kohala Coast resorts, Waikoloa, the Mauna Kea and Mauna Lani areas, Kailua-Kona and Keauhou sit along one dry coastline. Waimea is uphill in ranch country, and the east side around Hilo and Volcano is a long drive across the island.

Start with where most guests will sleep, then look for a venue within an easy drive. Our Mauna Lani restaurants guide and Waikoloa restaurants guide describe the Kohala resort areas.

Kohala Coast resorts

The Kohala Coast resorts offer oceanfront lawns, lava-rock terraces, ballrooms and golf-course settings, with coordinators, guest rooms and an indoor rain plan in one contract. Most resorts require their own banquet kitchen, so outside caterers and private chefs are generally not allowed, and food and beverage minimums apply. A private residence nearby often hosts the welcome dinner, rehearsal or day-after brunch instead.

Beaches and parks

Beaches in Hawaiʻi are public, and commercial wedding activity on state shoreline, including state beach parks on the Kohala Coast, is regulated by the Department of Land and Natural Resources. Planners and officiants who work on beaches normally hold the permit and know the limits on group size, set-up and sound. County parks have their own permits and rules on alcohol, so check with the county before you plan a toast.

Black-sand and lava-edged beaches photograph beautifully, but footing, wind and heat are real on the west side. Plan shade, water and shoes for older guests.

Waimea ranches and upcountry estates

Waimea, in the cool green uplands between the Kohala mountains and Mauna Kea, holds ranch land, pastures and estates that host weddings with mountain views and a paniolo feel. Evenings are much cooler than the coast and can be misty. Venues set their own rules on caterers, alcohol, end times and noise; ask for them in writing before you sign. Waimea chef days carry a published surcharge on our side for elevation and drive time. See our Waimea restaurants guide for the town.

Hilo gardens and the east side

Hilo and Volcano offer gardens, waterfalls and rainforest, with more rain and lower prices than the west side. It is a very different wedding: greener, wetter and quieter. From the Kohala Coast it is a two-and-a-half to three-hour drive. East-side events are quoted separately on our side with dedicated staffing, and we do not run a same-day Kona and Hilo round trip. Our Hilo restaurants guide covers the town.

Private residences and vacation rentals

A private residence is the most personal Big Island venue and the one with the most homework. Hawaiʻi County requires short-term vacation rentals to be registered, and whether a home can be rented short term depends on its zoning. Many owners and associations also forbid events. Get written permission for the event, guest count and hours, and confirm the registration.

A home with a real range, a fridge, a covered lānai or dining room and a lawn with an indoor backup is the setting for an at-home reception. Resort residences often cook well and still have vendor rules, which we arrange with the property before the first welcome pour.

Wind, vog, heat and event weeks

The Kohala Coast is one of the sunniest places in Hawaiʻi, and afternoon winds there can be strong enough to move tents, centerpieces and veils. Vog, the haze from volcanic activity, sometimes drifts over the west side. Plan a covered fallback, weighted décor and a later ceremony when the heat drops.

The Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona compresses lodging, traffic and grocery windows, so flag those dates early if your week overlaps.

Sunset, timing and questions to ask

The west side faces the ocean, so Kohala and Kona ceremonies often look straight into the sunset. Most couples start about an hour before it, so photographs catch the light and dinner is served as the heat drops. Ask each venue the same short list and get the answers in writing: are outside caterers or chefs allowed, and is an insurance certificate needed; is there a working kitchen; where is the power; how many restrooms and parking spaces; when does music stop; and what is the named plan for wind or rain.

Where a chef or a staffed wedding week fits

If the venue allows outside food, choose between a chef-led dinner and a staffed event. For a family table, a private chef Kona dinner is planned with you, shopped on the west side the day of service, cooked and served at the house, and the kitchen is cleaned afterwards.

For a reception of roughly ten to seventy-five at a west-side estate, wedding catering Big Island writes the week as separate lines: welcome dinner, rehearsal, reception and recovery brunch. Other staffed parties are Big Island catering. Servers and a sous-chef are on their own hourly lines. Tables, linens, tents and rentals are not included unless you ask, and then they are quoted separately.

What the food costs with us

Big Island wedding food starts from $225 a guest plus staffing. Signature dinners are $210–$325 a guest with groceries included, smaller dinners start from $165 a guest, and elopements are a fixed evening from $825.
